Prince Madoc Fundraiser

The purpose of the Prince Madoc= Fundraiser is to procure the funds to create a memorial to honor one of America= ’s first explorer’s.  What = we need, besides actual funds, are ideas from each of you of ways to raise mon= ey for this endeavor.  Some idea’s are:
1) selling bricks with the purchaser’s name engraved on it, 2)placing= a plaque with each donators name listed, 3) concert fundraiser, 4) recruit ot= her Welsh Societies to hold local fundraisers.=  
Another idea that we would like to pursue is having a Park in Alabama named after Prince Madoc.  = Any help or suggestions with this are greatly appreciated.

It is unfortunate that the Senate failed to raise the reinstatement issue on their agenda.=

It is sincerely hoped that the matter will be raised within the Senate when the next sitting is convened in January 2009.

I have started an e-petition which is asking the National Assembly for <= st1:country-region w:st=3D"on">Wales to establish a Welsh honours system and having established such a system then honour = ;the writer Jan Morris.  As Jan has written so thoughtfully the W= elsh influence in the development of the United = States as well as writing about Canada, I was hoping you would consider giving the e-petition.  You do not hav= e to be resident in Wales= to sign it. As there is already cross party support for the idea of a Welsh honours system it would be fitting if the= first recipient was Jan who has promoted such an inclusive approach to Welsh identity.

Hope you are well.  I came across an essay by an American who lectures= in English at my old University, Lampeter, wh= ich is a small rural village in the heart of Welsh speaking West Wales.  It is a very small college, one of the smallest in Europe, but it is the oldest Uni in Wales.  It was founded i= n 1822 by the Bishop of St Davids as a theological col= lege to save Welsh ordinands to the priesthood of the Anglican Church in Wales (the Church in Wales) = the expense of attending Oxford or Cambridge, which were the only other Universities in E= ngland or Wales at the time.  In the essay whe writes abou= t Lampeter, Wales and captures the place and the people beautifully, she does it by writing about one man, the Post Master in the s= mall village of Lampeter, a man known to me, what sh= e says about him and his voice are absolutely spot on.   It probably tak= es an outsider to write an essay such as this.  You may already be aware = of the essay, it won the Pushcart Prize in America, but just in case you= are not I attach it for you.  I hope you enjoy it.

I= am a documentary filmmaker from Wales and I was fascinated to stumble

across your petition for the Madoc plaque in mobile bay.

T= he reason is simple - in 1987 I left film school and with a small grant

from a trust in the UK I traveled to the US (aged 23) to follow in the=

footsteps of Madoc<= /span>. I was a film student and I carried a small film camera

with me and made a film re-telling = the story of Madoc. I filmed all the

sections in North Wales then flew to Alabama. I then = tried to find your

plaque!

very good start to my film!

Welsh immigrants to the United States held community singing events like this in their churches to retain their community, their heritage and their language and these are one particular cultural birthright of Welsh-Americans. Cymdeithas Madog will be = heading back to Iowa for the 32nd annual Cwrs C= ymraeg Welsh language week. Cwrs y Rhosyn Gwyllt, The Wild Rose Course, will be held July 13-20, 2008, on the campus of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.

Cwrs Cymraeg (which simpl= y means "Welsh Course") emphasizes the spoken language, with classroom instruction at various levels ranging from absolute beginners to quite advanced. The teaching staff of experienced Welsh-spea= king instructors is brought from Wales and North America . There are approximately 5 hours of language class e= ach day, supplemented by further language and culture-related activities in the afternoon. Evening events such as singing, folk dancing, Welsh-language fil= ms, and a Noson Lawen (= talent night) provide additional opportunities to relax while enjoying a Welsh-language atmosphere.

Eisteddfod Y Cwrs / The Cwrs Eisteddfo= d

One of the high points of Cwrs Cymraeg is our own Cwrs Eisteddfod, a literary competit= ion in Welsh that includes all levels of learners. The winning bard at the highest (most fluent) level receives the Cymdeithas Madog chair, a beautifully wrought miniature version = of the official chair for the 1989 Llanrwst National Eisteddfod.

Eisteddfod topics for levels 1 through 5 are announced at the start of the course; however, to give participants more time to compose, the topic for levels 6 = and 7 is announced early. The topic for the 2008 Eisteddfod is "Pontydd" (Bridges).

This topic is inspired by the lovely historic covered bridges of Madison County, which students may visit as part of the optional field trip during Cwrs Cymraeg y Rhosyn Gwyllt. Entrants m= ay interpret or apply the topic in any way they wish. Your entry may be prose = or poetry, but it must be a piece of original writing of a minimum of 350 word= s. You may use any written materials you like (dictionaries, grammars etc.) but you may not consult any living Welsh speaker for assistance with your entry= .

The Welsh Harp & Heritage Society
of North America, Inc.

The Welsh Harp &a= mp; Heritage Society was established to promote Welsh culture through Wales= ’ national instrument, the harp, and its associated traditions. The traditi= on of the harp in Wal= es directly relates to may other Welsh traditions including singing, folk dancing, poetry, and, ultimately, the language itself. The society sponso= rs Welsh Heritage Week.

Membership in the= Welsh Harp & Heritage Society is for anyone with an interest in Welsh cultu= re and heritage.  Annual society dues are $20 for Individual, $30 for Family, $50 for Sponsor or $100 for Patron.
