General Discussion

I find myself once again apologizing to each of you. I am sorry for having to cancel the meeting on such short notice. A dear friend of ours died the Friday night prior to the Saturday meeting. Kelsi = Nettles fought Leukemia for the past 7 months, but lost the fight on 25 August, 200= 8 at the tender age of 14 years old. She was survived by her parents, little sister, and grandparents. It was a real shock as the surviva= l rate for the type she had was 86%. Hopefully without confusing you, she was the daughter of Amberlee’s (my daughter) ex fiancé of tw= o (2) years. K= elsi had acquired a special place in our hearts. Please pray for her family.

Gift to AWA from Inner Frame of Conwy, Wales

We received the Frame today from Inner Frame of Conwy, Wales. It is very beautiful and I can not= wait for each of you to see it in person. I am inserting a picture I took but it does not do the actual Frame justice at all!

It reads

“This plaque, commissioned on behalf of the Alab= ama Welsh Association, commemorates the landing of the Welsh Prince Madog at Mobile Bay, Alabama, USA in th= e year 1170 AD.

The image, taken at Rhos-o= n-Sea, shows where that epic journey commenced as he and his brother Riryd sailed into the sunset on the ships Gorn Gwynan= t and Pedr Sant and thus defining the discovery of America in the 12^th Century.”

Below it is written again in the Welsh language. Awesome!

Trip to Mobile

We are planning a group trip to = Mobile on Saturday, 23^rd August, to see the play “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Os= car Wilde, proformed by The Players’ Theatre = of Glamorgan, Wales. They are performing the Thur. 21^st at 8pm, Fri. 22^nd at= 8pm, Sat. 23^rd at 8pm, and Sun. 24^th at 2pm.

It will be fun for the entire family. Please let me know if you are plan= ning to join us no later than 12^th August. The tickets are $17.00 for Adults, $14.00 for Seniors & Military, and $10.00 for Students. They are planning to sing “T= he Land of our Fathers” for the Alabama Welsh Association, which is goin= g to be a once in a lifetime opportunity!

We will leave early on Saturday morning, meet with Mar= garet Odom regarding the Prince Madoc plaque, then attend the show at 8pm. I am a musical the= atre librettist/lyricist from Swansea, south = Wales and I am writing to Welsh societies across the USA regarding a new Welsh musical, "My Land's Shore". It is a music= al set during the Merthyr Rising of 1831 that de= als with the story of Richard Lewis (aka Dic Penderyn), the first martyr of the Welsh working cl= ass. The music is by Christopher J. Orton from Chepstow in Monmouthshire and the Book and Lyrics are = by Christopher J. Orton and myself. The world con= cert premiere of "My Land's Shore" was performed at the Gate Theatre= , Cardiff in Augus= t 2007 and was very well received by audiences. “My Land’s ShoreR= 21; is a tale of conflict, social injustice, moral dilemmas, love, guilt and heartbreak - an epic musical gift from the musical nation of Wales to the world.

We are currently i= n the process of making a studio recording of the entire score of the show with some leading West End vocalists and ho= pe to promote the show to a countrywide and worldwide audience. We really do believe this is the musical Wales has been waiting for.

We also believe it is a piece of musical theatre that audiences of ex-patriot Welsh peo= ple in the USA would love to see and hear. Therefore, I write to request your assistance= . I would be most grateful if you could pass on details of "My Land's Shore" to all your members and, in particular, to any musical theatre societies with connections to Wales and the Welsh community, who may possibly be interested in staging a production of the show. Also, if you know of any prof= essional theatre producers or patrons with a Welsh heritage who may be interested in producing a show that has the potential to become the "= ;Les Miserables for Wales", please let me = know and/or pass on details of the show to them on my behalf.

Subject: Welsh Surnames in Dixie

Pick up a telephone directory in any small town in <= st1:place w:st=3D"on">Dixie and you will find as many Welsh surnames su= ch as Adams, Jones, Jenkins, Williams or Price as you will find of the Irish, S= cots or English.

What you wont find is a definitive explaination or written histo= ry of when they migrated into the Southern states of America. It does seem howev= er, that they came into such places as Jamestown Virginia, Wilmington North Carolina, Charleston<= /st1:City> South Carolina and later settlements c= ame from Delaware & Pennsylvania to settle along th= e Pee Dee River of South Carolina. All while America was nothing more th= an British colonies.

There are even accounts that some of the enlisted men of the 8th Alabama Infantry " Irish= " Regiment of Mobile Alabama dockworkers also included afew Welshmen in 1861. However, most of the Welsh w= ho had came into the American South had long before assimilated into the general society unlike their northern counterparts. = For the most part the stories of they Welsh in the South are lost to us today. Their Grandfathers & fathers had probably fought for American Independence during the Revolutionary War & during the War of 18= 12.

We do know that some Welsh had bee= n in the South for a long time as some had aquired enough wealth to own slaves. As most Americans know African slaves almost always took the family names of their old masters. There is no doublt this is why so many Welsh surnames are found= among black communities today. Most freed blacks were uneducated fieldworkers &= amp; knew nothing about Wales or Welshmen so it is very, very doubltful tha= t they assumed Welsh surnames because they had heard the Welsh were people who d= id not believe in the American institution of slavery. Some Welsh in the South had indeed practiced slavery as evidenced by so many blacks with We= lsh surnames.

Perhaps someday new evidence will = reveal more information about the early migration of the Welsh into the American South. What we do know is that they have been here in substantial numbers since before the begaining of America.

I suppose they came to America for the same reasons as everyone else. I just wish they had not done such a g= ood job of assimulating & hiding their past a= mong the English, Scots & Irish & we would know much more about them today. Billy E. Price

I read your AWA newsletter with interest - I was surprised at the number of contributions from our homeland.

Wales is changing, the o= ld industries of Wales, the coal and steel, ha= ve disappeared only to be replaced by leisure and high tech industries. Is it for the better, I do not know. T= he coal miners and steel workers were all of one family and looked after one another, today you are lucky if you see your neighbour= let alone get to know them.

October 12 -Competition 'Tell me about Wales in 5 minutes'. This competition has two section. One is spoken, the entrants talk (with examples if theywish) with = each person having exactly 5 minutes to tell the most important points abou= t Wales. = The second section is written with alimit of a lega= l page (about 450 words). We might possibly have a children's = section ? Enter 1 or more sections if you wish.

November 9 - Welsh Religious Revivals - Fred Davis

December 14 - Christmas celebration including jokes, poetry and music. Held at Gareth's house in Alpharetta or at Lib's in Du= nwody ( logisticsto= be analyzed and decision made).

January 11 - The Welsh in Patagonia - presentat= ion by Jenny and Bob Young.

February 8 -A Welsh P= icture Book. Another competition, not too competitive, = with a limit of 10 images about Wales. Each entrant selects for them the most telling images of Wales. = Same rules as in October, maximum 5 minutes talk; maximum one page written. Ente= r 1 or more sections if you wish.

March 1- St David's Day Lunch. Felici= ty is looking at our options to make sure that we properly celebrate our patron s= aint without bankrupting the society.

April 12 - A musical afternoon including harpist at Tom's home.

May 10 - Visit on 2nd Saturday in May to t= he Alabama Welsh Gathering

June 14 - Summer Tea Party with Angela Evans in North Georgia.

The 'Welsh Players' as the Island Players affectionately call The Player= s' Theatre of Glamorgan, Wales, UK are to return to The Island Playhouse next month to start off the 60th year= of theatre on the Island. They will bring with them one of t= he most famous of British plays, Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest".

The Welsh Players were here four years ago when they presented the Welsh Poet Dylan Thomas' most famous play "Under Milk Wood". The Welsh Players are delighted to be coming back and are bringing two new faces with them, Gemma Titley = who plays young Cecily and, straight from serving with the Royal Air Force in <= st1:country-region w:st=3D"on">Iraq is Ryan Powell as Lane the Butler to Algernon= Moncrief.

Yes it is August 21st,22nd,23rd &24th that we app= ear at the Mobile Theatre Guild, we were there about 4 years ago with Dylan Tho= mas' "Under MilkWood" and is seems everyone enjoyed it, hence our next visit. We are appearing first down on Anna Maria Island in Florida 15th,16th & 17th August, we have acted there= about 12 times over the past 30 years.

Now, about your parents, we live approximately 12 miles east of Aberdare, so it is a town well known to us, the world is a small place, don't you think? It would give us much pleasure to meet with y'all if you attend one of the performances, in fact we rehearse in a little place called Mountain Ash or Aberpennar = in the Welsh language, which is only 5 miles from Aberdare.

Please do all you can to whistle up support as we are coming 'out of season' as fa= r as theatre in Mobile is concerned - the only time they could fit us in - and as you might imagine in these sad times, the cost of getting to Mobile & Florida for 9 people has been considerable.

Anyway, enough of the negative, we so look forward to meeting you, should you be ab= le to make one of the performances. We might even sing the Welsh National Anth= em after the show for you in Welsh, "Mae Hen Wlad Fy'n Nhadau" 'Dear L= and Of My Fathers' in English, as I'm sure you know.
