THE HISTORY OF THE ALABAMA WELSH ASSOCIATION
|
How it all began....
It was March 4th, 2006 that we had our very first meeting. The founders and charter members were all present in the conference
room of Amerex in Trussville. Billy Price, Paige Smith (ACA President), Jenny Honeycutt, Janis Price, Irene Williams, and Mrs
Elliott. It was a glorious day for the Welsh in Alabama. (see pictures on the Members page) Billy Price had been talking to Paige
Smith (ACA President) for over three years about starting a Welsh Association, with affiliation to the Alabama Celtic Association.
Finally, in the fall of 2005, Billy told Paige he would try to create the Alabama Welsh Association.
As the AWA founder Billy worked hard over the next several months recruiting new members. He even had his children going to
Celtic events to pass out information, and acquire new members. By June, the AWA had grown from the originial six members
to an outstanding 23 members and a free web page on yahoo.com, and had recruited his sister, Janice Gattis to create and
maintain the web site.
By August 2006, the AWA had grown to over 35 members, and Billy thought it was time to officially vote in officers to ensure the
association continued to grow and succeed. He proceeded to have all members vote at the next meeting (September 2006) for
officers (i.e. president, vp, etc). Billy was voted as the AWA first President.
Billy began working on creating other chapters of the AWA throughout Alabama as the Alabama Welsh State Coordinator and in
less than one year of the first AWA meeting, he has helped to create the Alabama Welsh Association chapters in Trussville,
Anniston, Hunstville, and Tuscaloosa. Please visit our apparel page and order your AWA shirt!
